Florencia Taccetti in Minneapolis

Argentine Tango Classes and Workshops

A native of Buenos Aires who is regarded as one of the premiere teachers of Argentine tango, Florencia Taccetti has established a schedule of regular classes and workshops in Minneapolis/St. Paul.  Between her extensive schedule of weekend workshops throughout North America, Florencia teaches classes on Thursday nights in Minneapolis.  While she is resident in Minneapolis, Florencia also offers private lessons and unannounced group classes.

During early 2008, Florencia took a lengthy break from break teaching regular classes.  During her break, Florencia returned to Buenos Aires to recharge her porteña soul.  While in Buenos Aires, Florencia worked with her ex-partner and teacher Gustavo Naveira.  Florencia said that Gustavo still surprises her with his excellence as a dancer and teacher.  Florencia resumed teaching her regular classes during the second week of April—inspired and ready to give the best of her porteña experience to those in her classes.  Florencia's June classes were a continuation of what she taught in April and May.  Florencia's mid-summer classes were a little less formal.  Her exciting fall classes conveyed Tango Secrets from La Porteña.  Her early 2009 classes focused on milonga.

At mid-summer, illness forced Florencia to take an extended break from dancing and teaching.  In response to Florencia's illness, her friends in Minneapolis and St. Paul organized Milonga Para Flor to help support Florencia and celebrate her contribution to the community.

On October 15, Florencia resumed teaching her ongoing classes.  At the beginning 2010, Florencia's Wednesday night intermediate and advanced class and Thursday night beginning class will both focus on milonga.

Florencia also organizes workshops with touring instructors in Minneapolis.

Florencia's comments: In this milonga class we'll be playing with the evolution of milonga from the most traditional patterns in to the most innovative ones that play with musicality.  Some of the elements with which we will work include
* Recognizing milonga phrasing — when to use "traspies" inside the phrase and when to hold for breaks in the music and for how long.
* Use of simple traspies that allow for easy changes of direction.
* Use of mini-tiny back and forward ochos in milonga.
* Incorporating "barridas" in milonga, which is lots of fun!!!

Instruction will start promptly at 8:15 p.m., so plan to arrive at 8:00 p.m. for registration and warm up.  The warm-up time is particularly necessary because you don't practice every day as we do in Argentina.

Intermediate/advanced classes are typically taught in a series with new topics introduced about every 6-8 weeks.

All of Florencia's classes are open to women who want to lead as well as men who want to follow.  The only requirement is that you bring a partner of your own size and weight so you don't hurt yourself or your partner.

Florencia's Wednesday classes are now open to anyone who has a partner and wants to attend.  Those with less experience, should start with her Thursday night classes.  (See Thursday class information below.)

Florencia's comments: Milonga is a very fundamental part of the tango family.  Tango was born from the milonga rhythm  As a dance form, milonga is more simple, happy and fast than tango.  Milonga is not really a separate dance from tango, but because the rhythm and the spirit are so different, we dance it differently.  Milonga is a good diversion from tango because it lightens the mood of a milonga, providing a break from drama and elevating everyone's spirit. So, after a tanda of milonga, everyone is ready for more tango.

This an open series, and people can join any night if they come with a partner.  As always, please email and let her know whether you plan to attend with or without a partner.

Instruction will start promptly at 8:15 p.m., so plan to arrive at 8:00 p.m. for registration and warm up.  The warm-up time is particularly necessary because you don't practice every day as we do in Argentina.  So, at least you can give yourself those 15 minutes of practice before class to be attuned with your brain, body and soul at the moment you are to start assimilating information from the class; OK?  Life is rushing us all the time, but at least do the best you can to be on time and give yourself and your partner the opportunity to connect peacefully with each other in those 15 minutes.

The beginning to all levels class is best for newcomers to tango, dancers who have less than three years experience, and anyone who wants to review the fundamentals.  It is also a good class for dancers who wish to switch roles —if they come with a partner of the same gender.

Newcomers with partners are always welcome, and they will work with the class or separately with my assistants depending on the topic.

Beginning to All Levels classes are typically taught in a series with new topics introduced about every 4-6 weeks.

All of Florencia's classes are open to women who want to lead as well as men who want to follow.  The only requirement is that you bring a partner of your own size and weight so you don't hurt yourself or your partner.

Florencia began teaching tango in 1988 and has taught continuously since then—in Europe, Buenos Aires and North America.
